PRESIDENT BUSH TO LIGHT STATE TREE DESIGNED BY LOCAL VOLUNTEERS DURING LIGHTING OF NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE
New York - November 29, 2005 (Washington, DC) -- On December 1, 2005, at 5 PM (ET), the President of the United States of America George Bush will light the state trees during the 82nd LIGHTING OF THE NATIONAL CHRISTMAS TREE on the Ellipse near The White House in Washington, DC (see the attached list of local state organizations that designed the state trees). “Volunteers from all the states, territories and the District of Columbia have given their time and talents to design and create tree ornaments that symbolize the history, the heritage, and the culture of their homelands,” commented Audrey Hartzell, state tree coordinator. “Thousands of Washingtonians and visitors to the nation’s Capital will view the National Christmas Tree and the state trees this holiday season. Each organization has represented their state through creativity representing the great, diverse and unique riches of each state to create the ‘Pathway to Peace.’” The state trees are lit during the Christmas Pageant of Peace ® event featuring performances by volunteer entertainers, the President’s Christmas message, and the lighting of the National Christmas Tree. The Opening Ceremony of the 2005 Christmas Pageant of Peace will include performances by: • United States Navy Band • Ricky Skaggs • Maya Angelou • CeCe Winans • The VOENA Children's A Capella Choir • Dale Kristien • Brad Oscar • Merlin Olsen Biographies of each performer, details of the event and history of the Christmas Pageant of Peace are available at www.pageantofpeace.org. Satellite feed broadcast information is available at the end of this release. The lighting ceremony is the beginning of three weeks of celebration in music for the Christmas Pageant of Peace. Each night during December, musical groups primarily from the Washington area perform for the entertainment of visitors to the Ellipse. 2005 CHRISTMAS PAGEANT OF PEACE STATE TREE SPONSORS ALABAMA Metropolitan Arts Council Birmingham Contact: Jan Schmidt (205) 251-1228 ALASKA Farthest North Girl Scout Council Fairbanks Contact: Mora Lutomski (907) 456-4782 ARIZONA Boys and Girls Clubs of Phoenix Phoenix Contact: Bridgett McDonald (602) 621-3716 ARKANSAS Birchtree Communities Benton Contact: Anthony Walters (501) 303-3271 CALIFORNIA Mothers & More San Francisco Contact: Anna Whitcher Kutz (415) 668-7680 COLORADO Smith Renaissance School of the Arts Denver Contact: Bob Roscini (303) 388-1658 CONNECTICUT Harriet Beecher Stowe Center Hartford Contact: Mary Ellen White (860) 522-9258 DELAWARE Art Therapy Express Program Hockessin Contact: Lisa Bartonli (302) 239-6694 DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA District of Columbia Children of the American Revolution and Custom Wood Gifts by Shelia Washington, D.C.
